The Process of Making A Painting

The process of making a painting is a pretty long one.

First, I use a reference that I take to come up with an idea. What this means is, I look at a folder that I have on my desktop and use those to be inspired to make a painting these are places that I have travelled to or are local destinations.

Then I make a pencil sketch. This lays out the main areas of the painting and helps me understand where to put the various colors.

The next element is to decide what paints that I use. Usually, I pick a yellow, a red and a blue. These are because it will allow me to make all sorts of different colours, using various combinations.

Then I put down a first layer, which is a light layer and allows for some flow of the painting. This is usually using the wet on wet technique, which allows for soft colours to blend in with one another. This is usually important for backgrounds where things may not be in focus.

I will then use multiple darker layers often times combining all three colours and one to either do the colour or make it darker.

This layering technique I use over multiple occasions until I am satisfied with the painting. The last steps are with adding in a number of details using a smaller brush.

On some paintings, I might add in a highlight, using a more opaque colour or a gouache white paint.
