I’ll be exhibiting at the Leslie Grove Gallery in the You Do You exhibit!

It was a juried exhibit and of the three that were part of my new Malaysia series, my favourite one of Kukop was chosen.

Reactions

I’ve always find it supporting to see other artists celebrating my work, and being super supportive. My mother immediately forwarded the news to my Malaysian cousins/uncles/aunties in a group chat, despite probably half of them not being able to write to me in English (probably a cousin would have explained what this was about to them).

My artist statement actually talked about this embracing of my heritage which was in line with the theme. I’m working on making my messaging clearer in my work.

Maybe I’ll muster up the courage again to submit an application for the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair (TOAF). However, it has been encouraging to hear of established artists not getting into the TOAF. My public rejection (on screen, in front of 50 other artists) doesn’t feel so bad that way.

Goals – altering?

I had made it a goal to achieve in 5 years to be at a gallery, but given how quickly that has happened, I guess my new idea is to be represented in a gallery. I missed a session on how that would work with the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair since there was simultaneously an event at the Artists’ Network.

Comparing Artist Communities

Given I attended two information sessions about how to make good art applications, one at the TOAF and the other at the Artists’ Network, I noticed how different the approach was. The Artists’ Network seemed more welcoming to beginners, being a highly interactive session that was less formal.

While the TOAF had more diverse artists in the room, I got the sense that the purpose was to show transparency of the process, a justification of the 2/3 rejection mark for applications. It did seem easier to get into the Riverdale Art Walk than the TOAF. That said the TOAF seemed to have grants available for support.

Framing and Preparation

There are particular instructions on framing for the Leslie Grove Gallery, so I had to go back to DeSerres to figure out what frames could work. If I had the workspace and equipment, eventually I might want to make my own frames given how incredibly expensive each of these are.

While I did see plastic frames, I was worried about how they might crack when installing the D-rings used for hanging and wiring. So, I instead bought a wooden frame. Part of me is worried I’ll do something silly and drill a hole through the other side of the frame.

I have also learned how I should paper my artworks on the back. It doesn’t seem too difficult to do but I’ll need to buy more materials soon. We have to drop off the artwork next Sunday so it will be very busy until then.
